There is something extraordinarily disarming about Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. This is especially so, given the solemn context: “…fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning from God…” (v. 3). So what is the last thing the King of the Universe is going to do before accomplishing his destiny? He bends low to enact the humblest of gestures and tells us that we must do the same.
With Peter, we are stunned by it. And yet, it is of one piece with the Incarnation itself and the Cross that lies ahead. Is it possible to muster up enough awe before this kind of love?
